Club History

In 1938 there were 13 Junior Women's Clubs in Connecticut representing 67 members attached to the Connecticut State Federation of Women's Clubs (CSFWC), which is part of the national General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC). The age limit for a Junior was 30.  In 1941 the Junior clubs elected their own first executive board.  CSFWC raised the Junior age limit to 35.

The Simsbury Junior Woman's Club (SJWC) was incorporated on April 24, 1957.  On June 20, 1957, we joined CSFWC.  In 1957 there was an age limit of 40 for Junior clubs. By 1960 there were 26 Junior clubs representing 2,251 members.

In 1979, with over 60 member clubs, the Junior Women's Clubs of Connecticut petitioned the CSFWC to raise the age limit beyond 40 and have a more equal status with the Women's clubs.  When their proposals were rejected, the Junior Clubs resigned from CSFWC and the independent Connecticut Junior Women's Clubs, Inc.(CJW) was born.  Today, CJW is comprised of 64 Junior Women's Clubs representing over 2,000 women in Connecticut. CJW holds two conferences each year, when clubs gather to share information, vote on officers, recognize club achievements, and promote an atmosphere of sisterhood in our endeavor to help our communities.

Today, the Simsbury Junior Woman's Club is celebrating over 50 years of service and commitment to our community. Our members give of their time and energy to service projects ranging from holding storytimes at the public library and hosting holiday parties for underprivileged children to delivering Meals on Wheels to local seniors.

In addition, SJWC participates in CJW's State Project.  CJW State Project is a long-term affiliation with an organization chosen by CJW member clubs.  CJW supports the chosen organization for four years with fund raising, awareness campaigns and volunteerism. The current State Project  is the Covenant to Care organization.  Their mission is to advocate, mentor and provide direct assistance to neglected, abused or at-risk children and youth.
