How We Give

Simsbury Junior Woman’s Club Awards $6,500 To Local Non-Profits in April 18, 2019

The Simsbury Junior Woman’s Club (SJWC) awarded $6,500 to ten local non profit recipients at its annual Appropriations Reception on Thursday, April 18th. In addition, a scholarship was awarded to outstanding Simsbury High School student Janya Robotham in recognition of her commitment to community service and her academic record.

Simsbury Junior Woman’s Club Second Vice-President Lori Stethers presented the grant awards and thanked the recipients for their contributions to our community.  “Tonight we've learned so much about the good that is happening in Simsbury and the Farmington Valley thanks to these organizations,” Ms. Stethers stated.  “The Simsbury Junior Woman's Club is gratified to be able to celebrate these important members of our community, and we thank our members, neighbors, and local businesses who make this possible through their support of Luminary Night.”

All of the funds awarded at the reception were raised by members of the Simsbury Junior Woman’s Club through the annual Luminary Night fundraiser.  Held the first Sunday evening of every December, Luminary Night brings neighbors together to light luminary candles in a non-denominational celebration of the season and community. The Simsbury Junior Woman’s Club would also like to give a special thanks to the Ensign-Bickford Foundation for their continued financial support of Luminary Night.  Luminary kits will be on sale again in November, and may be purchased online at www.simsburyjuniors.org or from any member of the Simsbury Junior Woman’s Club.

How the Funds Are Raised

SJWC’s annual Luminary Night Fundraiser, “Light Up the Night, Simsbury”, is the primary means of raising money which is then appropriated back out to the community. Luminary night is held on the first Sunday evening in December.

Luminary kits are sold and placed in yards & driveways in neighborhoods throughout Simsbury. Lighting of the kits at this time of year exemplifies the joining together of friends, neighbors and the community as a whole, at the start of the holiday season. Local businesses also join the fun by sponsoring the event and lighting luminaries outside of their businesses and organization by lining the streets downtown.
